Set in late-1980s Mexico, Vanilla unfolds through the eyes of Roberta, an eight-year-old girl growing up in a household of seven women. Across generations and clashing ideologies and personalities, these women hold their lives together as mounting debt threatens the home they share.

For Roberta, the walls of the house become a world of resilience and fragility, laughter and arguments, tenderness and fracture, all moments that gradually reshape how she sees herself and those around her.

Drawing from her own childhood, director Mayra Hermosillo crafts a textured family drama that captures both the immediacy of a child’s perception and the larger pressures of economic survival. By situating a girl’s gaze at the centre of the story, Hermosillo reveals how belonging is forged in unconventional families, and how love, memory and struggle can define what it means to hold a home together.
