97 Mins | 2024 | Australian Premiere | Bulgaria, Greece | Director: Kristina Grozeva, Petar Valchanov | Feature | Fiction | World CinemaGuided by a female psychic, a top-secret Bulgarian military taskforce digs for alien artefacts to change history.
From award-winning Bulgarian co-directors Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov (The Lesson, Glory) comes the final instalment in their celebrated ‘Newspaper Clippings Trilogy’ – a series of films devoted to sensational real-life news events and the ‘post-communist absurdities of Bulgaria’.
Inspired by the 1990s excavation of the ‘Tsarichina Hole’ (Bulgaria’s Area 51, a purported paranormal hotspot), Triumph follows Colonel Platnikov (Julian Vergov) after he is tasked with leading a top-secret military operation to dig for alien artefacts and return Bulgaria to greatness. Guided by a self-proclaimed, powerful psychic, Pirina (acclaimed Bulgarian actress, Margita Gosheva), top-ranking military officials gather in Western Bulgaria and the alien excavation begins … just as the Colonel’s young daughter, Slava (Maria Bakalova, Borat Subsequent Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy 3) starts showing signs of telepathic, paranormal promise, shaping the course of the mission.
A taut, darkly comedic social satire that deals with ‘military madness’ and the historic fall-out of Communism, Triumph continues Grozeva and Valchanov’s legacy of bringing stories from their Bulgarian homeland to international audiences.
