86 MinsThe press sheet for this avant-garde stop-motion animation takes a derisory stab at narrative - “A cosmic animator is hired by the Central Committee of the People's Republic to realize a philosophical film under the gaze of Chairman Mao, who is displeased and sentences them to death right at the start. Be relieved that the sentence didn't stick, being refuted by Monkey and Pigsy from Journey to the West.” Like almost everything in this film, this should not be taken seriously. At the outset we are warned: “Don’t attempt to reason with this film. It’s raving mad and makes no sense at all.” An overabundance of imagery? A refusal to talk sense? Terry Gilliam on dope? Dadaists, moviejuicers, deranged avant-gardists of all kinds, this is your film. Don’t look for the joke on the screen—you’re living in the joke.
