111 MinsJohan harvests reeds and cares for his granddaughter in the regional marshlands of the Netherlands. When he discovers the body of a murdered girl, he embarks on a search for the killer. Sven Bresser’s debut feature, using non-actors to outstanding effect, was one of the highlights of Critics’ Week at Cannes. It has been acclaimed for its brooding reinvention of the crime genre. Instead of melodrama, the film offers us intense silences, as darkness oozes out of the rural landscape and animals point to the beast within. The land is rich in sex and death if you take the time to look. You can lose yourself in the tall reeds, or perhaps you can find yourself — and face the question of just how far removed you are from the monstrous and the murderous.
