A compelling love letter to this quintessentially British directorial duo, movingly narrated by Martin Scorsese.

A compelling love letter to cinema, this documentary charts the careers of the quintessentially British directorial duo Powell and Pressburger, movingly narrated by Martin Scorsese. From The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) through A Matter of Life and Death (1946), Black Narcissus (1947), The Red Shoes (1948) and The Tales of Hoffman (1951), this colourful documentary revisits some of the most unforgettable images in cinema.

Contextualising the origins of an unlikely collaboration against the sweep of 20th century European history, this documentary also considers Powell’s notorious portrait of deadly cinematic obsession, Peeping Tom (1960), his final Australian films, and his belated late-career reappraisal.

Previously unseen archival footage sheds light on Powell and Pressburger’s distinctive working methods, and their very different characters. Made in England is also a revealing portrait of Scorsese, and a heartfelt account of his love of these films, a formative influence for him since childhood.
