From favela parties to the unapologetically sexually charged explicit world of kinky funk (putaria), the camera moves with the music's swagger and momentum, plunging us among dancers and twerking bodies. As Sabrina pursues fame while contending with a mother whose own ambitions were thwarted, Funk exposes the race and class divisions shaping modern Brazil without surrendering its pleasure or vitality. Rather than reducing the favela to a backdrop of violence or deprivation, the film celebrates funk as a culture of joy, self-expression and resilience, finding dignity and possibility in the communities from which it emerged.
