Legendary pianist Bill Evans (Anders Danielsen Lie) is at the height of his powers when the sudden loss of bassist Scott LaFaro leaves him unmoored. From this rupture emerges a luminous, finely controlled portrait of a life in retreat, circling grief, repetition and the lingering imprint of a close musical partnership. Evans moves through dim apartments, studios and late-night sessions, increasingly withdrawn, as music becomes less performance than process.
Unfolding in fragments, the film traces a private world of quiet disintegration with remarkable precision. Shot in striking black and white, it renders the early 1960s as authentic artefact rather than just period reconstruction. Less a portrait of genius than a study of absence, it lingers in what cannot be played.
