I Am/Jestem

"I have chosen my absolute favourite film, I Am/Jestem. I love this film like I made it. Films are so personal. I haven't shown it to anyone I love in fear of them not liking it. Food in this film emerges as a potent emblem for survival and love. Every time the main character finds food, you are absolutely with him, relishing every miserly morsel from collecting scrap metal to buy a bowl of soup, to breaking shop windows to steal bread. The relationship between the boy and the little girl who lives on top of the river bank begins so strangely, with beer but then as their friendship blossoms, she begins to leave him food parcels hung on her gate before she leaves for school. I love the way that the food in this film is at its most basic." POH LING YEOW

CHEF'S PROFILE: Poh Ling Yeow shot to national fame as the runner-up of Network Ten's inaugural MasterChef Australia in 2009. Born in Malaysia and raised in Adelaide, she trained as an illustrator and has exhibited her paintings professionally. She has freelanced as a graphic designer and worked in film as a makeup artist and actress. She is currently the star of ABC's cooking show, Poh's Kitchen, filmed in Adelaide.
