Sometimes a film makes history; it doesn't just document it (Sundance Film Festival).

In 1982 Pamela Yates (The Reckoning, BAFF09), an idealistic young filmmaker went to Guatemala and made When the Mountains Tremble, an indictment of the Guatemalan military's campaign of genocide against the indigenous population of the highlands. Her film exposed this genocide and propelled peace activist Rigoberta Menchú to international prominence and a Nobel Peace Prize. Almost three decades later, Yates returns to take part in the campaign to document the atrocities that took place and to ensure that the guilty are brought to justice. She reconnects with Menchú, with former guerrillas (including a man who once shot her down), lawyers, archivists and archaeologists all working to bring the truth to light. Yates is unashamedly partial as a documentary maker. She believes in making a difference, in contributing her grain of sand (the granito of the title) to the struggle. This is a work born of anger, of compassion and of a steely determination to show that film can make the world a more just place.

PAMELA YATES WILL BE A GUEST OF F4, AIDC & THE FESTIVAL.

WHEN THE MOUNTAINS TREMBLE (1983) ALSO SCREENS AS PART OF THE F4 MASTERS CLASSICS SERIES
